Vendors of technology for human capital management (HCM) continue to tout their solutions’ ability to integrate across HCM to connect workforce management (WFM), core human resources, and talent management. A recent announcement by SilkRoad regarding a Human Resource Management System (HRMS) for small- and medium-size businesses (SMBs) is an example. The characteristics of integration impose a limit on these efforts, however, and a buyer of HCM technology should vet vendors’ claims thoroughly: Plenty of integrated systems perform well, but if real-time data is an organization’s priority, the preferable option is a solution that calls for as little integration as possible.
